The idea is really pretty simple. Just pick a single date and time for people across the globe to\u00a0gather at their local pools.\u00a0This year it was on June 14. And if you live at <a title=\"Celebration, Florida\" href=\"http:\/\/www.celebration.fl.us\/\">Celebration, Florida <\/a>you could have\u00a0headed down to Lakeside Park or Spring Park Pool\u00a0to participate. In fact, 159\u00a0neighbors showed up to participate at these offical\u00a0host locations for the 2012 WLSL record-setting event.<\/p>\n<p>The 2010 inaugural WLSL event established the <em>Guinness World Record&#x2122; <\/em>for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson ever conducted, all to build awareness about drowning prevention.\u00a0Tragically, accidental drowning remains the leading cause of unintended, injury-related death for childrenages 1-5; and the second leading cause for children under 14.\u00a0Participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88%. Last year\u2019s WLSL event grew\u00a0by over\u00a0400%, with over 20,000 participants, representing 13 countries around the globe and 45 US states.<\/p>\n<p>The WLSL program works to promote drowning prevention by delivering one clear message\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0<em>Swimming Lessons Save Lives&#x2122;. <\/em>\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to see such incredible growth of the WLSL program in two short years,\u201d said Rick Root, President of the World Waterpark Association. \u201cThe greater the participation, the more families we\u2019re able to reach with this crucial message.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So was a new world record set? YES! On June 28, 2012 the WLSL team announced\u00a0a NEW WORLD RECORD had been set for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson ever conducted! With thousands of pages of documentation reviewed (and many submissions still to count) the number of participants is expected to reach\u00a023,000! We are proud to say that 159 of those were counted at Celebration &#8212; and have left their mark on history!<\/p>\n<p>Hats off to\u00a0the Aquatics Staff at Celebration; the Summer Breakout Counselors at Celebration; all the\u00a0volunteer witnesses (including Pam Beuttel, Kim Colon, Erica Cowin and Dianne &amp; Lonny Tosi); and\u00a0Celebration resident, Joel Kostuch, who captured a <a title=\"360 degree panoramic photo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.barnstorm-inc.com\/wlsl\/worlds-largest-swim-lesson.html\">360\u2070 panoramic photo<\/a> of our lesson at Lakeside Park Pool.
